12 Reasons to Work Remotely from the Canary Islands

by

The Canarias is running another international campaign to attract remote workers that will be showing across cities like Berlin, London, and Madrid.

I was based here for 8 months and can only agree, it’s a great choice! I fell in love with the life quality so much that I added it to my list of places where I can imagine having an apartment one day…

Here are a few reasons to work remotely from the Canary Islands.

1. Perfect weather all year round

The Canary Islands is the warmest area in Europe. Come here for warm and sunny weather all year-round, with temperatures averaging around 20-25 degrees Celsius.

You can enjoy the outdoors and take advantage of all the activities the islands have to offer without worrying about the weather. Will it be sunny tomorrow? Yes, probably – again!

2. You can go island hopping

The Canary Islands are made up of seven main islands, each with their own unique charm and character. If you choose the Canary Islands as your remote working destination, you can explore all of the islands and discover the different cultures, landscapes, and activities that each has to offer. This means you can easily change up your surroundings and mix up your routine!

The seven islands are:

  • Tenerife, the largest and most populous island in the group. It is known for its stunning mountain landscapes, including Mount Teide, which is the highest peak in Spain.
  • Gran Canaria, known for its rugged landscapes and beautiful beaches, as well as its lively capital city, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
  • Fuerteventura, known for its long, sandy beaches and its strong winds, making it a popular destination for (wind)surfing and kiteboarding.
  • Lanzarote, known for its volcanic landscapes, including the Timanfaya National Park, where you can see the remains of a volcanic eruption that occurred in the 18th century.
  • La Palma, known for its lush, green landscapes and its beautiful beaches, as well as its astronomy observatories, which make it a popular destination for stargazing.
  • La Gomera, which is known for its unspoiled, natural beauty and its unique landscape, including a network of hiking trails that offer stunning views of the island.
  • El Hierro, which is the smallest and least populous of the Canary Islands. It is known for its rugged, mountainous landscapes and its beautiful beaches, as well as its unique flora and fauna.

I’ve been to all of them except for El Hierro and could easily return. Next time I’m coming for you as well, El Hierro… 😉

3. Safety and peace of mind

The Canary Islands are considered to be a very safe destination, with low crime rates and a friendly, welcoming population. Since they have been a popular tourist destination for decades, the local authorities and businesses take steps to ensure that visitors feel safe and welcome.

Overall, the combination of a strong police presence, a focus on tourism safety, and low crime rates contribute to the Canary Islands’ reputation as a safe destination. Many people who visit the Canary Islands report feeling safe and secure during their stay.

It’s easy to get into the community via Facebook- and Whatsapp groups no matter what you’re interested in. You’ll find everything from hiking to business forums! At the same time, the islands still retain a local vibe (as long as you visit areas outside of the most touristy ones), so you can enjoy the laid-back, relaxed atmosphere.

5. A great place to work remotely without breaking the bank

The cost of living in the Canary Islands is generally lower than in many other European destinations. As long as you don’t arrive last minute in the middle of the high season, you can find good value for your money when it comes to things like accommodation, food, and transportation.

Additionally, the islands are a popular destination for budget airlines. You can often find low-cost flights to the Canary Islands from many European cities. Enjoy a high quality of life while keeping your expenses under control while you work remotely on the islands.

Finding housing is often one of the biggest struggles for digital nomads.

The Canary Islands have a wide range of accommodation options, from cozy apartments and guesthouses to luxury hotels and resorts. Choose a neighborhood that matches your preferences. Whether you want to be close to the beach, the city, or the mountains – there are alternatives that cater to every lifestyle!

And if you feel like changing the vibe completely, you can easily move to a different neighborhood or island to experience something new.

10. Even if you have 99 problems, here WiFi isn’t usually one

The islands have a strong Wi-Fi infrastructure, with high-speed internet available in most areas. This makes them an ideal location for remote working and staying connected with clients and colleagues.

Hey Samira – I just discovered your site (great content, nicely presented!), by way of your article on Latin dance in BsAs (sad to see that many of my fave venues, such as Azucar and Feeling, haven’t survived into the post-pandemic area). I’m curious about the Canaries; what’s it like in terms of salsa/bachata?

Hey Zain, thank you, happy you found it useful 🙂 Yes, it’s pitty – so many good memories from those places!

You’ll find some places in the bigger towns on special evenings. I spent 8 months on the islands but some places still had restrictions so there wasn’t much dancing then in general even if things were open. It might have changed now, the islands are only becoming more popular. If you’re in Spain, you’ll find great options around BCN, Madrid, Seville. There are also some cool festivals throughout the year in smaller towns by the ocean. Hope you have a great time!
