History of Nova Friburgo

Nova Friburgo was founded in 1818 by a group of Swiss immigrants seeking a new life in Brazil. They settled in the region and established an agricultural colony, which flourished in the early years.

In the 19th century, the city underwent a major transformation when it became a hub for textile production. The industry brought economic growth to the region and helped propel Nova Friburgo into a prosperous city.

It has darker sides to its story too, such as having been an important center for slave trade, until it was gradually restricted and finally completely abolished in Brazil in 1888.
Despite its successes, Nova Friburgo faced a major setback in 2011 when a severe flood devastated the region. The city suffered significant damage. Several people died, and many businesses and homes were destroyed.

The people of Nova Friburgo rallied together and rebuilt their beloved city, which now stands as a testament to their resilience and perseverance.

Nova Friburgo is located in the Serra dos Órgãos mountain range, which gives it a unique geography and climate. Think forests, national parks, breathtaking views, and many outdoor activities.

Restaurant Dona Mariquinha: Traditional, unique, and delicious

If you only go to one place in Nova Friburgo, make it this one. Dona Mariquinha is a true gem in Nova Friburgo and a must-visit for anyone in search of delicious homemade food. This restaurant has been passed down from generation to generation and is now run by the daughter-in-law of the original owner, Dona Maria. It has a fascinating history about a determined woman who worked hard against all odds and started her own business.

The food is so incredible that it has gained a reputation throughout the town. Everyone recommends it – back in the days and now. The buffet offers an impressive spread of traditional dishes that are all freshly prepared with love and care.

At Dona Mariquinha, you’ll be treated like family. Rodizo style, the servers come to your table with all kinds of delicious, traditional dishes until you can’t take it anymore. Don’t miss out on this authentic, unique, and unforgettable dining experience in Nova Friburgo.

It’s also a hotel with a few cozy rooms. While I didn’t stay here this time, room number 8 stands out as one of the best, with a lovely little veranda.

The Loft: Creative cocktails, live music, and the best view in town

nova friburgo

Located at the top of a hill in the charming Swiss neighborhood of Nova Friburgo, you’ll find the coolest bar in town: Loft Friburgo. With its prime location just a stone’s throw away from the center, it offers an amazing view of the city. It’s one of the best places to watch the sunset and sets the perfect mood for a night out.

But it’s not just the view that makes this place stand out. At Loft Friburgo, you’re in for a treat: live music, unique drinks, and tasty food. On Fridays, the atmosphere is laid-back and intimate, with a DJ spinning that’s sure to hit all the right notes. The bar’s cocktails (like the Red Velvet), food (such as the tapioca snacks and the contra file), and desserts are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression.

Cerverjeria Pontal: Making delicious beer accessible

nova friburgo

Cervejaria Pontal is a beer lover’s paradise, founded by Bruno and Ney. Both have always been passionate about beer and used to experiment with different imported sorts. When they discovered there wasn’t much variety in Brazil, they started making their own at home.

They took courses, read books, and worked at a brewery in Rio. As the craft beer industry started to take off in Brazil in 2012, they decided to open their own brewery in Nova Friburgo eventually. After a lot of research and preparation, Pontal launched in 2018.

It hasn’t been an easy journey, but the determination paid off. The team has increased from 2 to 16 people. In addition to producing their own beer, they also produce for other brands. Their brewery is eco-friendly (their beer on PET helps), with over 70% of their waste being recycled.

Apart from coming to the brewery for a tour and tasting, you can find their beer in some markets, restaurants, and delicatessen shops.

They have big plans for the future, with aspirations to expand their market even further and introduce a food menu. “We would like to make amazing beer as accessible as bad beer”.

From a classic Pilsen to unique creations like their double-smoked beer, which won the Bronze Medal in the Copa de Cervezas de América (It’s incredible) – it’s easy to be happy here.

Esquina 2: The best Picanha in Nova Friburgo

nova friburgo

Esquina 2 has been a local favorite for over 22 years. What started as a humble bar with a specialty in picanha, has since grown into a bustling restaurant that attracts both locals and tourists alike.

The secret to their success is no secret at all – it’s all about quality. With their kitchen open all day, the team at Esquina 2 serves up some of the tastiest picanha and cold beer in town. And while the venue may not be the fanciest, it’s authentic and their flavors certainly make up for it.

Owned by Fabio, the team at Esquina 2 consists of 25 dedicated staff members. Committed to providing a great experience, which is why people keep on returning.

And exciting news for the restaurant – in 2023, they’ll be opening up a brand new venue close to the teleférico. This two-floor space promises to be even bigger and cozier than the original, so be sure to check it out.

They also have a Japanese concept, but haven’t tried it.

Cheirin Bão Nova Friburgo

nova friburgo

Cheirin Bão Nova Friburgo is a cozy cafe that opened in Nova Friburgo in 2022. It’s a franchise model and the current manager tells me that his mother was fond of cafes like this. His father was a businessman who ran a successful bakery, a bar, and two sandwich shops in Rio. Inspired by his parents’ businesses, he found a way to make it happen for himself.

One of the best bakeries in Brazil, Forno do Minas, provides all the products used in the cafe, including cheese, guava, and more. I try their delicious Pão do queijo with turkey and their award-winning French press coffee. They also have a great selection of Cachaça from Minas and their banana toffee pie was amazing.

What makes Cheirin Bão special is the team behind it. The staff is friendly and makes you feel at home. If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by and experience their warm hospitality and delicious coffee and snacks.

Confeteria Baião

nova friburgo

Baião is a family-owned bakery that has been serving the community for over 43 years. With Portuguese roots, the bakery has become a popular spot for both locals and tourists alike. People often come here fo its recipes originating from its foundation. Such as the Cheese and Ham Pie, the Bomba (a cream puff), the Suspiro (a type of meringue), the Sweet Bread and the Butter Cookies.

They are also regularly introducing more modern treats such as the Torta Crocante (Crunchy Pie), apricot roll, the coxinha (a typical Brazilian snack), the Whole Wheat Salgados (savory pastries), and the German Pie to satisfy all tastes. From the suspiro to the sweet bread (pão Dulce), cheese and ham bread, and the torta crocante… everything I try here is delicious!

The bakery offers a variety of options for customers with dietary restrictions, including gluten-free, sugar-free, and lactose-free options. What sets Baião apart is their commitment to quality. With three talented cousins running the bakery as confectioners, you can trust that everything is made with care and expertise. Be sure to stop by Baião and experience their amazing baked treats for yourself!

Confeitaria Torrone

nova friburgo

Torrone is a simple, family-owned bakery and confectionery chain that has been operating since 1996. Their handmade recipes, professional ingredient selection, and constant focus on quality have helped them gain more and more customers, making Nova Friburgo a sweeter place.

With four locations (Monte Líbano, Cadima Shopping, Shopping Roseiral, and Galeria Suíça), Torrone offers a variety of delicious treats. I try their chicken pie with caitupury and it’s delicious! In addition to their in-store offerings, Torrone also provides practical and affordable party kits. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite or something to satisfy your sweet tooth, Torrone has got you covered.

Mesiano Bistro

nova friburgo

Mesiano Bistro is run by a very busy and hardworking woman who seems to do it all! While it has a fun menu, I only stopped for a quiche and a coffee this time. Despite being busy, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere cozy and inviting.

Get out of town: Visit Lumiar

nova friburgo

When I ask locals about what to do in Nova Friburgo I get lots of different tips. Something that every single person mentions though is to visit Lumiar. Located in the mountains just a 40 min drive from Nova Friburgo, the Luminar area is known for its stunning natural beauty. This picturesque region is home to a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, horseback riding, and waterfall visits.

Luminar is also a foodie’s paradise, surrounded by farmlands and producers of fresh ingredients. The area is dotted with charming restaurants and cafes.

Where to eat in Lumiar: Restaurante Luminar

Resturante Lumiar

nova friburgo

With a history spanning over 20 years, this restaurant has become a beloved local institution that still manages to capture the hearts of locals and tourists from far and wide.

Run by Ana Paula, a geography professor and daughter of an agricultural family, Restaurante Lumiar stands out as a shining example of how to showcase and celebrate local culture through food. Ana Paula’s passion for her roots is evident in every aspect of the restaurant, from the carefully curated menu, and creative interior, to the warm and welcoming ambiance.

One of the unique features of Restaurante Luminar is that it’s one of the few eateries in the area that’s run by a local. In fact, the restaurant is a true family affair, with Ana Paula’s husband helping out and her mother-in-law contributing to the menu with family recipes.

Be sure to try their delicious bamboo and caitupury starter. And don’t miss out on their famous aipim. I try the pork accompanied by a Guaraná Friburgo, the regional soft drink. I’m not really into sodas so it’s a bit too sweet for me, but the food is delicious. In the evenings, the concept changes to pizza. Check their Instagram for an update before you go to know what’s going on
